Abstract
Being able to communicate with other members of the community is an important part of feeling a sense of belonging within a local neighbourhood. South Wales Police, working in partnership with Cardiff Council’s ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) service, developed the PolicESOL course. The course aims to develop English language skills in the context of improving community safety and communications between the police and black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities. The course consists of a number of training sessions each designed specifically to provide knowledge and understanding of how to live safely in the UK and remain within the law..
