More than good ideas: the power of innovation in local government

Images from the publication 'More than good ideas'

Following a successful chief executives' workshop at the Local Government Association (LGA) conference in July 2008, the IDeA, the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) and the Beacon Scheme (now the Local Innovation Awards Scheme) produced a collection of essays on innovation in local government.

‘More Than Good Ideas: the Power of Innovation in Local Government’ encapsulates some of the thinking around public sector innovation to help stimulate further thought, discussion and the sharing of next practice.

The new Public Services Innovation Laboratory (the Lab) was announced in the government's Science and Innovation White Paper, 'Innovation Nation' – March 2008.

The Lab, hosted by NESTA, launched in March 2009 with £4 million funding a year. NESTA’s aim for the lab is to demonstrate how public services can be transformed by establishing experiments to solve critical social problems. An important component is  the link between the LGA Group and the Lab to enhance the understanding of the work of local government.
