Reducing smoking has continued to be a major issue for public bodies and this has been reflected in the local area agreement (LAA) process. - Smoking is the main cause of premature deaths in Britain. - It costs the National Health Service (NHS) about £1.5 billion a year to treat smoking-related illness. - The cost of NHS stop smoking services is £61 million a year
