Government Connect benefits realisation fund

In July 2008, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced its Data Access Policy, which stated that councils must use a government-approved secure IT channel when exchanging sensitive personal data with central government.

To support this initiative, DWP set up a £1.5 million benefits realisation fund, managed by Local Government Improvement and Development. The purpose of the fund is to help councils implement the Government Connect (GC) secure network and take advantage of the many security and efficiency benefits that this brings.

We nominated 19 projects selected from the 193 applications submitted earlier this year. The bids address a range of themes, including trading standards, crime and anti-social behaviour, disabled parking, safeguarding children, and service delivery for older people.

An online community of practice has been set up to support the preparation of bids and share learning and best practice among the successful applicants.
