Healthy Communities resource

Welcome to the Healthy Communities web resource. This website explores local government’s role in supporting health improvement and tackling health inequalities.

The new Government is intent on giving local councils more responsibility for the health of the public. It is widely accepted across Government that maintaining improvement in the nation’s health can be achieved more cost-effectively through councils. Council initiatives may be more beneficial than the health service trying to fix harm done to someone’s health after years of self-neglect.

The Healthy Communities web resource will continue to support local councils in this important journey by providing a wealth of information and advice ranging from latest news, policy guidance and events to JSNAs and best practice in exercising strong leadership, working in true partnership and delivering integrated health improvement.

Healthy Communities - the results, outputs and outcomes of a five year Programme

In 2006 the then Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) was funded by the Department of Health (DH) to build capacity in local government to tackle health inequalities and improve health. As a result of its success in doing so, the IDeA’s Healthy Communities programme received further DH funding in 2008 to continue and develop its work until 2011. The Healthy Communities Programme now sits within the Local Government Association (LGA) (formerly known as the Local Government Group). The Programme closes on 31 December 2011. However it will leave behind a considerable body of valuable work, and this pamphlet is a guide to some of that legacy.
