Association of Public Health Observatories
Purpose
The Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO) represents and coordinates a network of the 12 public health observatories (PHOs) in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
The APHO enables partnership working across the PHOs. It also produces information and data on health and healthcare for policy makers, practitioners and the public.
Individual PHOs act as a resource for regional health-related intelligence, which can inform local commissioning and policy decisions.
Each PHO provides national leadership on a particular policy area, for example, the West Midlands PHO leads on cancers and older people.
Audience and membership
The APHO and related PHOs are important to all who require up-to-date, health-related information on a local or national scale.
Their websites hold a great deal of useful local information, including area-based community health profiles, first produced in 2006.
Events
The APHO website provides links to events promoted by other organisations that may interest health practitioners and others.
Link to local government and involvement in Healthy Communities Programme
The APHO and related PHOs produce information that may inform council decision making and planning. Community Health Profiles, for example, provide a brief introduction to the health issues of a local area.
The APHO and PHOs share many priorities and partners with the Healthy Communities programme. For example, the London Health Observatory is the leading observatory on health inequalities. It works in this area with organisations including NICE, the Audit Commission and the Centre for Public Scrutiny.
Current issues, autumn 2007
APHO priorities for the future include supporting commissioning and developing a stronger local government focus on public health.
The APHO is also helping develop the Government’s public health information and intelligence strategy, ‘Informing healthier choices’.
