The IDeA's Local government careers brochure provides an overview of local government and the careers it offers. It includes:

  • profiles from local government employees about their work
  • 'focus on' sections with more detail about specific career areas
  • information about where to look for jobs.

Local government focus on leaflets

This series of ten IDeA leaflets provides information on some local government skills shortage areas, including:

  • building control
  • environmental health
  • legal work
  • library and information work
  • occupational therapy
  • planning
  • social care
  • social work
  • trading standards
  • traffic and transportation

The leaflets give details about each occupation, including relevant qualifications, potential salary levels and where to get further help.

Local government talent website

The LGtalent website offers local government careers information including:

  • over 200 career descriptions
  • information and advice about recruitment into local government
  • current local government job vacancy adverts and online applications

Workforce Matters community of practice (CoP)

The Workforce Matters CoP helps councils network and share good practice in areas including talent management, recruitment and retention, and workforce development.

LGA My Council campaign

The My Council campaign is about raising the standing of councils in the eyes of government, key opinion formers and the public. It sets out to increase public awareness of the wide range of quality services delivered by councils and to demonstrate that taxpayers get value for money from their council.

LGA Local Democracy campaign

The Local Democracy campaign aims to make councils more relevant and useful to young people. The campaign can provide practical tips and ideas for councils about how to organise activities and increase youth engagement. Resources available include ‘how to…’ guides, the pupil power card game, case studies and suggestions about how to gain funding for campaigns.
