Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE)
Definition
The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) advises the government on its building programme. It gives advice to get better value through better design.
Its work includes:
- advising clients, contractors, architects and planners
- helping public agencies with good design
- promoting better education, skills and careers for the built environment
- conducting research and running campaigns on architecture, design and public spaces.
The 20 Building for Life (BfL) criteria embody CABE’s vision of functional, attractive and sustainable housing. New housing developments are scored against the criteria to assess quality of design. Local authorities are encouraged to adopt BfL criteria as part of their design guide.
