Improvement policy
These pages highlight what we are doing to support corporate improvement policy for local government. They provide resources to help your policy development work and we add to it as the policy environment changes.
These pages are intended primarily for policy and performance officers or those working within corporate policy units in local councils. However, we hope that anyone with an interest in improvement policy within local government will also find this resource useful.
This area of the website does not focus on improvement policy in specific service areas, such as children's services or healthy communities. To find out more about those developments, please refer to the individual resources.
About the Strategy and Development Unit
The Strategy and Development Unit works with policy makers and practitioners at national and local level to help local authorities turn national policy into practical, local improvement. It also helps to inform national policy makers of the local, practical implications of policy developments.
The unit:
- facilitates thought leadership in LG Improvement and Development, either taking that lead directly or supporting specific experts
- provides strategic support in developing new LG Improvement and Development products and services and evaluating existing ones to ensure they are fit for purpose in relation to the evolving policy landscape
- works directly with practitioners through our policy and performance community of practice to identify good practice, generate ideas and exchange information and
- supports the Local Government Association in lobbying Government and other agencies, where relevant to local government improvement issues.
