Equality and diversity

Our society is becoming more complex and diverse. Overall population is growing, we are more ethnically diverse, and we are getting older. New patterns of migration have affected previously homogenous communities.

Equality legislation has helped challenge much discrimination and prejudice, but there are still big equality gaps. Councils and their partners have a real opportunity to challenge inequality, to ensure that everyone has an equal chance in life and to respond to the diverse needs of the communities they serve.

The Equalities and Cohesion team at the LG Improvement and Development helps councils to meet these challenges. We provide up-to-date information on equality policy and practice, such as where to find evidence and data, guidance on legislation and examples of good practice.

  • The Equality Framework for Local Government Last updated 26 July 2010

    The Equality Framework for Local Government (EFLG) builds on and develops the work councils have done on the Equality Standard for Local Government (ESLG). It contains many new features, is simpler to use and more relevant to the way local authorities work today.

    This section offers related guidance, resources and sector led discussion material on some of the most current equality themes. It includes information on the six identified equality target groups, or strands, the equality bill, specific service provision for women suffering from violence, and human rights. Workforce issues are also covered here, including the new Yes We Can resource.
