Induction for new councillors, leaders and executive members

Hundreds of newly elected councillors are sworn in each year. They take on responsibility for the wellbeing of their communities and the spending of millions of pounds of public money on local services. For many it is an overwhelming experience.

Responding to requests from councils, LG Improvement and Development has designed a number of induction activities focused on the needs of new members during their first few months in office. The agency sees induction as the start of a councillor's long-term personal and career development.

Local Leadership Academy development modules

The Local Leadership Academy (LoLA) has an introductory programme offering a choice from five half-day modules covering essential skills for new members:

  • being an effective ward councillor
  • community leadership at the local level
  • ethics and probity
  • overview and scrutiny
  • performance management

These are part of an extended suite of modules available all year round. Module fees are £1,500 each for delivery by a LG Improvement and Development consultant and an accredited member peer from the Peer Clearing House.

Peer Clearing House

LG Improvement and Development is working with a number of regional employers' organisations to design and deliver tailored regional induction.
