Ted Cantle

Associate Director

Ted Cantle is Professor at the Institute of Community Cohesion (iCoCo) and an Associate Director of the IDeA. He now works exclusively for both organisations on the community cohesion agenda.

iCoCo was formed as a centre of expertise to develop the community cohesion agenda and is supported by local government agencies, central government departments and by four universities. The IDeA was a founding partner and supports iCoCo to provide teaching and learning programmes, policy advice and the development of good practice and guidance, based on action research programmes.

In August 2001, Ted Cantle was appointed by the Home Secretary to chair the Community Cohesion Review Team and to lead the review of the causes of the summer disturbances in a number of northern towns and cities. The report, known as the 'Cantle Report' was produced in December 2001 and made 70 recommendations. The concept of 'community cohesion' was subsequently adopted by the government and he was asked to chair the panel which advised ministers on implementation.

During his 30 years in local government, he has held a range of senior positions and was appointed to many national bodies, focusing on urban regeneration, sustainability and change management programmes.

Ted cantle was the Chief Executive of Nottingham City Council between 1990 and 2001, with responsibility for 15,000 staff, and a budget of £600 million. He also had chief officer experience in Leicester City Council (1988 to 1990) and for Wakefield Metropolitan District Council (1979 to 1983) and was under secretary at the Association of Metropolitan Authorities (AMA) (1983 to 1988). He has also worked for Manchester City Council.

He also chaired the government's Construction Taskforce from 1998 to 2002 and chaired the industry steering group of Integration of New and Renewable Energy in Buildings (INREB) from 2004 to 2007. This is a Faraday partnership promoting renewable forms of energy. He has also had experience in the health sector and chaired the Queens Medical Centre Hospital Trust from 2001 to 2006. Ted Cantle was a member of the Environment Agency Board from 2000 to 2008 and was its deputy chairman from 2005 to 2008.

He is also an adviser to Carlton Television on diversity issues and is a visiting professor at the Nottingham Business School. He also chairs a charity, Sustainability First.

Ted Cantle is the author of  ‘Community Cohesion: A New Framework for Race and Diversity’, published by Palgrave Macmillan.

He was awarded the CBE in 2004 for his work on community cohesion and services to local government.
