Doncaster - Avalunch

Background

This project aimed to improve health and well-being by reducing social isolation and providing healthy meals.

What was done

Avalunch provides a community café, a meal delivery service and a ‘plate for a mate’ takeaway service for those who are not able to leave their homes.

The social enterprise focuses on the needs of:

  • Older people
  • Those who are socially excluded
  • Those who were recently discharged from hospital and have not fully recovered

It has developed a ‘make and munch’ healthy cooking-and-eating course for widowers and young parents.

It works with district nurses, local housing wardens, Local Older People’s Network and Mexborough Baptist Church.

The Communities for Health grant was used to expand the initiative by providing for:

  • Information technology
  • Kitchen equipment
  • Training for volunteers

Project achievements: outcomes and impacts

  • The equipment was purchased.
  • The initiative now has more trained volunteers to help.

Future plans and next steps

The social enterprise is growing from strength to strength:

  • To meet growing demand, the service will be expanding.
  • It is exploring partnerships with other organisations, Help The Aged and Sue Ryder Care.
