Oldham - Better Together project
Background
With Communities for Health support, Oldham trialled a project that brought different generations together, as well as encouraging healthier eating and more physical activity.
What was involved
A retired Royal Air Force chef helped children and young people to prepare a meal from start to finish, including choosing a theme, buying and preparing the food, laying the table, and cooking and serving the meal. Those involved also swapped stories about playground and traditional games, to see how they have changed over the years.
As well as the meals, the groups arranged activities that would appeal to all ages. These included a Scottish country dancing night and a Chinese dragon parade accompanied by a low fat cooking series.
Project achievements: outcomes and impacts
There were 72 participants overall, 47 of whom took part in the meal and the activity.
Individuals have reported greater confidence in preparing healthy food, trying new foods, and making informed choices about healthier options. Older people learned healthier versions of favourite traditional dishes.
A report concluded that this project has been very successful.
Future plans and next steps
One intergenerational project will be held every year. If the organisers win further funding, they will aim to do more activities.
