Beacon scheme
Definition
The Beacon scheme ended in March 2010 and was replaced by the Local Innovation Awards (LIA) scheme.
The Beacon scheme was set up in 1999 to share best practice in service delivery across local government. The Beacon scheme ended in March 2010 after 10 successful years of knowledge sharing.
Beacon themes were selected for each round of the scheme by government ministers. The themes represented issues which were important in the day-to-day lives of the public and reflect key government priorities.
Beacon status was granted to authorities who demonstrated a clear vision, excellent services and a willingness to innovate within a theme.
A total of 563 awards were made, involving 217 authorities and 12 best value authorities. This was broken down into:
- 419 awards – single applications
- 26 awards – joint lead applications
- 118 awards – joint partners.
